Open in Chrome Firefox Extension

One Firefox extension many people use is IE View which enables you to open or view pages in IE, then later an IE View Lite version was released by Grayson Mixon.

Well this handy ‘Open in Chrome’ addon for Firefox is a tweak of IE View Lite which essentially allows you to do the same as the original but for Google Chrome instead. It also allows you to configure sites to always open in Google Chrome, right click links and open in Chrome as well as adds a toolbar button.

This is very useful if you are browsing with FireFox and want to open a URL in Google Chrome to utilize the Incognito mode, or just want to see how a particual page renders.

Installation:

#1 Download

#2 Drag the .xpi to your FireFox window and restart Firefox for the addon to take effect

#3 Hit the Browse button and navigate to Tools >> Addons >> Open in Google Chrome then select Options and the following window will appear:

#4 Browse to your Chrome.exe file which can be found in the following locations:

Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\

Windows Vista

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\

Note: You will need to change USERNAME in the above paths depending on your username

#5 Once you have selected the path to your chrome.exe you can setup some sites to always open in Google Chrome, as you can see here i have chosen Chromeplugins.org

You are done and as you can see we now have a Chrome button, mines next to my Google Earth button:

On the URL, type in: about:internets
This will show the old Windows 3.11 screensaver of pipes. The tab name will read “Dont clog the tubes”. I used to remember this when I was a kid. After school, I’ll go to his office and poke around. I always see this screensaver on his computer.

Features:

Theme Management allows users to manage and install new themes at the click of a button.
Theme Distribution allows theme makers to pack their themes into a “Self-installing” EXE(users do not require Xchrome to install the theme)
XChrome Theme Wizard – Allows skin makers to take their existing skins and easily turn them into self extracting exe’s.

Changes :
Since the last release I have added some error handling, added an icon to the EXE’s (although if your using vista you may not be able to see them untill the icon cache refresh’s/clears. changed the theme builder into a much easier to use Theme Wizard.
the Xchrome theme installer no longer requires the user to have Xchrome installed.
so check it out and let me know if you find any breaks in it!

With this tool, to build the themes\default.dll file is far from a click.
Since the previous GChromeRES is slow and image names not well described, I made an alternative way, so this is it.

First and foremost -> Requirements:
GoRC.exe by Jeremy Gordon
http://www.jorgon.freeserve.co.uk/
and
ResHacker.exe by Angus Johnson
http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/
These files must be in the same directory where you’re going to extract this tool.

How to use:
- The zip file has PNG files in separate directories, you just edit them, and build with this tool.
- Test button to automatically replace the default.dll with the built one, so theme’s path must be correct.
- With Build+Test, is a shortcut for those actions, without the need to answer any questions.
Added Drag&Drop feature for dragging “default.dll” and dropping it in order to replace default.dll in Chrome’s path and after that Launch it.

Note: images or icons must not be moved from their directories, so once completed a theme design, backup those files to start another one…
However, if you want to modify the folder tree, just arrange them and modifiy default.rc file according to that.

I tested in WinXP and Vista, with Chromium and Google Chrome respectively, since this is a beta release, some bugs might be found.
